Anglo-Saxon life

Year 3 and 4 enjoyed a fantastic school trip to a local site of historical interest, Butser Ancient Farm in Hampshire.

They stepped back in time, exploring aspects of every day life in Saxon times to support their topic at school. It was a fun-filled day of learning and hands on activities. The addition of some authentic Anglo Saxon drizzle added to the atmosphere and the warm fires in the centre of the houses were very welcome and warmed us all up nicely.

During the action-packed day, the children carried out an archaeological dig, made Saxon jewellery, contributed to the building of a wattle and daub wall, bashed chalk to make a powder for the ‘clunch’, as well as making clay pots and learning about Saxon runes.

There was learning at every corner and the teachers were so impressed with the interactions from the children who were alert, polite and eager to fire their many questions at the friendly experts. What a memorable day.

Later, back at school, Year 4 pupils received History Department awards for their depictions of Anglo-Saxon life. Junior children receive these awards across all academic subjects for outstanding work.

Working at home, one pupil created a wonderful Anglo-Saxon village, which you can see in the images below as well.
