Our children in Year 4 had a wonderful school trip to Butser Ancient Farm, an archaeological open-air museum and experimental archaeology site located in Petersfield, Hampshire, not far from Westbourne House in the heart of the South Downs.
Year 4 teacher, Miss Hannan, said: “This was a great trip to go alongside this term’s topic ‘Traders and Raiders’ about the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings, which our pupils are really enjoying. Butser is a fantastic hands-on experience; the children handled artefacts, made chalk carvings and sewed Norse Runes. They explored Anglo-Saxon houses and found out about the different methods the Anglo-Saxons used to make houses, weapons and clothes. A few pupils discovered a new talent in horn blowing!”
One Year 4 pupil said on the way home: “It was soooo much fun. I loved sewing my initials as a Norse Rune. I also loved finding out what the letters meant, mine meant generous!”
