At Westbourne House School it’s not only the pupils who get to enjoy lessons but our parents also get a slice of the action.
Maths Workshop
Parents learnt how we teach maths and about subitizing and the importance of number sense in a session led by Mrs Langford, Deputy Head – Academic, and Mrs Rogers, Head of Early Years.
Mrs Langford said: “We are passionate about maths and believe that every child can be an excellent mathematician when given the right tools, support and encouragement. We use the Singapore method, which has problem solving at its core and uses the Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract (CPA) approach. CPA uses physical and visual aids to build a child's understanding of abstract topics and helps to deepen understanding which is fundamental to making progress in maths.”
“Thank you, it has been so interesting this morning to better understand how I can support my child in maths and make it fun at home."
Parent
“Mrs Langford and Mrs Rogers were so impressive,” commented another parent.
Reading Workshop
Beth Rogers, our Head of Early Years, and Caroline Oglethorpe, Head of Pre-Prep led a session on the phonic journey, how reading is taught, the aims of reading at home, and most importantly, how we aim to create confident and successful readers at every stage.
“Enjoyment of reading, success in reading – these are key to creating a love of reading in every child. All our teachers are absolutely passionate about supporting each individual on their journey to proficiency. Reading is the gateway to learning and so our mission is to ignite each child’s interest in and love of reading.”
