WHS Chess Clubs say goodbye to Mr Stewart, who has created a love of chess across the school
A huge thank you to Mr Stewart, our former Year 4 teacher, for creating so many chess opportunities and memories for our pupils to treasure. We are sad this era of Mr Stewart's chess clubs has come to a close, but wish Mr S all the best in his new venture: All Rise.
“I set up the chess club in 2014 and I had no idea how popular it would become and how much the children would love it. The junior, senior and pre-prep chess clubs are packed every week and the children now regularly beat me in matchplay!”
Mr Stewart
Mr James, Head of Cocurricular, said: "Over the last 10 years, Mr Stewart has taken chess to new heights at Westbourne House. He has instilled a love of chess and educated the children in the finer arts of the game. His after school chess club was a ‘must’, with an ever-increasing following of junior grandmasters.
"Mr Stewart formed chess links with schools and clubs and encouraged pupils to enter competitions both in school and out. He will be missed, but leaves a strong legacy. I wish him luck in his future career."
Mr James, Head of Cocurricular
We are pleased to announce that we are looking forward to welcoming the new chess coach next term, Mr Uba.
Chess medals and triumph: other chess news at Westbourne House School
Loud cheering and booming shouts of joy from Mr Stewart greeted our chess champions as they returned to Chess Club with their medals and cups!
The Sussex Junior Chess Competition at Windlesham involved 37 different teams within four divisions. Two competitions were held under the four divisions, the Primary Cup and the Butler Cup, and our Westbourne House A team came first in the Butler Cup, the combined A and B team came second in the Primary Cup and the B team came fourth.
“I am so proud of these boys. They think hard about their tactics and love being part of a team, always sharing their highs and lows with each other. I shall miss them, as well as all the girls who do chess, and who I hope there will be more of in the future.
Mr Stewart
The Butler Cup involved our Team A (primarily Year 6s) and the Primary Cup involved our Westbourne A and B teams (mixture of Years 3-6).
The Butler Cup A team included: Lucas M, Jamie R, Charlie W and Andrew X, placed 1st overall, playing three fixtures each, with 17 teams involved. The Primary Cup A and B team - Harry B, Bertie D, George H and Matthew K and our Primary Cup B team including Filip A, Isaac B, Darcy G and Michael S also faced three different opponents from 17 teams.
Thanks to Mr Gourlay for taking the team to Windlesham.
“Huge congratulations to everyone and a special shout out to Harry, Matthew and Michael who won all three of their matches.”
