Celebrating Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival

One of our new full-time boarders, George, had a tremendous day celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival with friends and houseparents at Westbourne House. The most important traditional festival in China after Chinese New Year, it is held on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar with full moon at night.

We ordered George some mooncakes to mark this Mid-Autumn Festival and George kindly chose to share them with the boarders after a supper of chicken chow mein, which of course they ate with chopsticks.

Under the light of the moon, we lit three sky lanterns and George spoke some words before each lantern was lit.  For the last one, he taught us “Happy Mid-Autumn Festival” in Chinese which we all said as the lantern took off. 中秋快乐 Zhongqiu kuaile!

“It was great, George taught us that the three lanterns stand for luck, love and happiness.  I can’t wait to share my country’s traditions with everyone.”
