Checkmate

In November, Westbourne House made history by hosting the largest chess tournament that we have ever held at the school!

We hosted seven schools in the first rounds of the U11 Sussex Junior Chess tournament and U14 Sussex Junior Butler Cup. Across the meeting room and library, there were 48 children playing chess.

Chess coach, Mr Stewart, advised the children ahead of the first match of three: “The better chess players take their time to make their moves. Make sure good sporting behaviour is at the heart of each match. Good luck to you all.”

The outcome for Westbourne House was very positive:

  • Our Butler Cup team of Lucas, Charlie, Jamie and Andrew won their group with Andrew winning all his games.
  • Our primary A team of Harry, Isaac , Darcey and Michael finished joint winners of their group, with Darcey winning all his games.
  • Our primary B team of Angus, Bertie, Magnus and George also finished joint winners of their group as well.
"It was exciting and exhausting to watch! A red letter day indeed."
Mr Stewart
