Our Year 4 scientists spent some of their afternoon lesson out and about doing their own version of ‘Darwin’s Walk’; Charles Darwin walked through natural habitats to understand why and how all living things (plants and animals) survived in certain areas.
They used pH detectors and a universal pH indicator to measure how acidic or alkaline the soil was as well as thermometers to measure soil temperature and soil moisture. They also investigated the strength of the wind using the Beaufort scale and assessed the weather.
Science teacher, Miss Day, said: “It’s great to be able to get outside and do some practical science. It really helps the children to develop their understanding of seasonal change and introduces them to the equipment we will be using during their science journey as we monitor how our natural habitat changes here at school.”
