Debating versus Lancing College

Last week, a group of eight pupils from Years 6 and 7 travelled to Lancing College Prep School, Worthing for a debating fixture.  The pupils debated in pairs and four debates took place.

The following statements were debated:

Cars are a curse on society.

It is better to live in the countryside than the town or city.

School trips are a waste of valuable lesson time.

You should have to be over sixteen to be able to buy chocolate, biscuits, cakes and fizzy drinks.

The Westbourne House debaters were exceptional.  It was clear that our debaters have benefited from the experience and practice over the last year: they were confident, self-
assured and extremely skilful.  The Westbourne House speakers used a technique which set them apart: they only used their notes as prompts and were accomplished at speaking independently not reading the material off the sheet.  This is a fabulous achievement and hugely effective.

It was a resounding win for Westbourne House that was thoroughly deserved.
