Street Child
Learning through drama is such a valuable way for children to empathise with the characters they are reading about in a book, says our Head of English, Cressida Williams.
“Our Year 5 pupils did really well re-enacting poignant moments from our class reading book, Street Child by Berlie Doherty. This helped them to fully understand the main character’s plight when his family were evicted from their home by the money-grabbing Mr Spink,”

Blackberry Picking
Blackberry picking in September is synonymous with childhood so what better way to bring it to life than using our magnificent school grounds?
Why? I hear you ask. Well, our pupils in Year 8 have been studying ‘Blackberry Picking’ by Seamus Heaney in their English lesson, a poem which depicts a seemingly innocent childhood memory of picking blackberries. “However, all is not what it seems…do ask the children what they’ve learnt,” said our Head of English, Miss Williams.
“I wanted them all to examine the early stages of a blackberry’s life from red to green to black, to help them understand the real meaning of the poem.”
