East Head beach adventure

As part of the topic Commotion in the Ocean, Year 1 are learning about rockpools, sea creatures, oceans of the world and plastic pollution. They have been inspired by the life of Jacques Cousteau, ‘protector of the seas’ and the shocking messages from Sir David Attenborough about the need to change our plastic habits, make an effort to save our oceans and protect the plants and creatures who live in them.

On Friday, they went on a fantastic trip to the beautiful, local beach at East Head. They were met by guides, Tim and Gilly from the Chichester Harbour Conservancy, who were full of interesting facts to share with the children. They learnt about the tides and took part in a sandcastle building competition so that they could track the movement of the tide. They then created huge sea creatures out of beach finds inspired by the artist Andy Goldsworthy.

The remainder of the trip was spent learning about the sea creatures that live on the beach, collecting shells and learning about how to stay safe at the beach. The weather held and the children finished off their visit with a yummy picnic lunch overlooking the sand dunes and sea. What a fantastic trip, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
