Exploring geography on the Isle of Wight

Our intrepid Year 5 children set off for a geography adventure on the Isle of Wight.

On the beach, near the Needles, they met a geologist from a local museum who brought fascinating artefacts down to the beach. The children then searched the 130 million year old (Cretaceous) rock beds for dinosaur and other fossils. They absolutely loved finding the fossils and one pupil told Mrs Pollock she could do it all day!  Despite a lot of searching, they mainly found fools gold, echinoids (sea urchins) and fossilised fish parts. It was a great introduction to paleontology!

Afterwards, they set off to sea on the ferry to take a closer look at The Needles and to see the formation of the stacks and caves.  It was a stunning trip.
