Girls' sport round up May 19

As I sit here contemplating what to write on a sunny evening, the first thing to mention has to be the weather! We have been much luckier than we were at this stage last year. Although a few matches have had to be cancelled, we have managed to play the vast majority.

It is a busy term for the girls with rounders, cricket, tennis and athletics to fit in. I have been impressed with the progress the girls have made with cricket from last year to this year. They now fully understand the pairs game and there is some really nice cricket being played. The development of cricket seems to have improved the girls rounders fielding too with lots of the skills being transferable between the two sports.

U13A

Retained the Highfield Centenary Cup but this was the first year it had been cricket and lost narrowly against Hurst.

Played 2, lost 2.

The girls have been a joy to coach with boundless enthusiasm. In cricket the girls are now confident at the crease, running cheeky singles and punishing misfields made by the opposition. Bowling is consistent and has a good line and length.

U13B

Won 1, lost 1.

Played 2, drawn 1, lost 1.

The girls have continued to show grit and determination as a squad. Batting and bowling has improved both in quality and consistency. Fielding shows great promise with good communication and throwing over long distances improving.

The U12’s cricket bowling in particular has improved hugely and better communication when batting has led to some successful innings. They need to be a bit braver when trying to stop the ball. Their rounders has been a little inconsistent!

U11A

In training the girls are working hard to improve their skills, especially listening to tactics and strategies. The group are hard-working and committed and a pleasure to coach.

U11B

The U11B team have progressed so much over a short amount of time. They lost their first match but through working really hard in training they have improved in all aspects of the game. As a team they are extremely supportive of each other and just thoroughly enjoy their sport.

U11C

The girls have done really well in cricket so far. They remain unbeaten and it is a pleasure to watch them play. Their bowling is consistent, whilst their fielding is improving each match. In both sports they communicate well and try to hit the gaps when batting.

The talent and enthusiasm amongst this group of girls is so exciting. We have had so much fun and made such incredible progress in the basics in such a short space of time. In cricket they have been enjoying the Friday morning nets session and their bowling is good as is their communication. They are now working on understanding the game more tactically.

U8

Played 1, won 1.

The U8s focused on cricket first in preparation for their match against Amesbury. I was really impressed with their basic skills and understanding of the game. We are now developing our fielding skills and learning the rules of rounders.

The U8s and U9s had a fun cricket training afternoon with Sompting Abbotts School which they really enjoyed and helped them re-cap all of the basic skills before cricket matches commenced the following week.

The senior girls (Y6-8) have played their inter-patrol cricket and it had to go down to the total number of runs scored to decide the overall winner!

  • 1st Otters
  • 2nd Tigers
  • 3rd Panthers
  • 4th Owls

Year 7 and 8 have also played their inter-patrol rounders. The results are as follows:

  • 1st Owls
  • 2nd Otters
  • 3rd Panthers
  • 4th Tigers

Athletics

Unfortunately we had to cancel our girls’ athletics meet due to some terrible weather overnight and into the morning.  However, the girls have still competed in the Cumnor PB event (Y6&8) and the Hurst meet (Y5-8). At Cumnor and Hurst there were new records set and beaten due to new weight and hurdle specifications. There were also lots of PBs (personal bests) and SBs (season bests) results. At Hurst the following children won their events:

  • Estelle Schwarz – Discus
  • Juliette Franks – High Jump
  • Chloe Barratt – 200m
  • Y6 Relay team – Chloe Barratt, Alice De Laszlo, Annabelle Dodd and Poppy Langmead
  • Poppy Langmead and Estelle Schwarz beat two long standing records for High Jump and Discus respectively. Additional new school record holders are as follows:

  • William Ferrier - Hurdles
  • Hugh Fleming - Shot
