Great Westbourne Bake Off - technical challenge

Twenty-one pupils from Year 6 kicked off the Great Westbourne Bake Off heats - and the mystery technical challenge was… a mini-quiche.

Food tech teacher, Mrs Bonn, said: “The standard was really impressive. There was lots of independent working, everyone was calm and collected and they all baked themselves proud!”

After the creation of quality quiches, it was the turn of our year 8s to produce some sensational strudels!

With the biggest turn out yet in the senior heats, the Year 8s did a fantastic job of crafting their culinary skills, including peeling, chopping, caramelising, shaping, scoring, baking plus many more! The school was truly awash with tantalising flavours: wafts of cinnamon, stewed apple and sweet caramel. Creativity was oozing out of the Food Tech Kitchen and Mrs Bonn thought it was "a phenomenal effort from our budding bakers".

It will be the turn of our Year 7s next once we return from the half term holiday.

We asked Mrs Bonn how she picks the technical challenges:

"Funnily enough I am just choosing and deciding some of the recipes right now. The recipes, some sweet some savoury, are based on the technical skills the pupils will have acquired during their time in Food Tech (and possibly practised further at home). We have a one hour time limit, so the recipes are chosen also with this in mind. The recipes are challenging, however not so difficult that the pupils will trip up (providing they follow the recipe carefully). We also have a theme each year, and with quiches and apple strudels already in the bag, pupils may well be able to second guess what the theme for this year is already! The mystery theme will most certainly begin to unravel (a clue perhaps), as we turn up the heat in the kitchen over the coming weeks."
