Harry Venning combines imagination, art and English

“Remember to go deep into your imagination and remember it cannot be wrong,” award-winning cartoonist, Harry Venning, told our Year 6 pupils at our Art and English Workshop Day.

“My mission is to make people realise you don’t have to be good at art to draw a cartoon – It’s not about the ink, it’s about the think. I am always amazed by what the children produce and these Year 6 budding cartoonists produced some terrific work today.”

As part of the Year 6 Art and English curriculum, Harry spent the day with the children and delivered a variety of exceptionally creative and fun cartoon workshops where the children discovered new ways to present drawings and communicate with others.

The Year 6 children also took part in workshops in stop motion animation and flip book creation. Head of English, Miss Williams, said: “It was great to see the emerging owls in the flip books because it mirrored the development of the owl, Stig, in the book October October by Katya Balen, which we are reading in English.”

“We have been working with the English department with a printing project inspired by the book’s illustrator, Angela Harding. The experience was magical - the children gained so much new knowledge and had a really wonderful day."

Mrs Jeram

Mr Tyrrell, Head of Year 6, brought along a book that his wife had given him 30 years ago, created by Harry Venning. Mr Tyrrell was delighted to have the opportunity to chat and get his book signed by someone whose work he had admired for a long time.

“It was such a lovely atmosphere the whole day long. I may have enjoyed it more than the children, if that's possible!” Mr Tyrrell commented.
