Churros
“At Westbourne we strongly believe that learning Spanish is not just about the words or grammar we teach but the culture that surrounds them,” says Spanish teacher, Mrs Sleep.
So, each term, our classes visit the Food Tech room to prepare a traditional dish. This time it was our Year 8 pupils’ turn and they had a great time cooking churros. Do you know what the ingredients are?

Tarte aux pommes
During Saturday Activities a group of children cooked in French whilst tackling the delicious tarte aux pommes. Madam Bennison commented: "Cooking in a foreign language is a recipe for success in many ways! You learn new vocabulary when you read the recipe: the names of ingredients, utensils and of course verbs. Following a recipe is also brilliant way of develop the skills you need to follow instructions. The children get to spread, chop, smell, taste, which are all activities that reinforce the words from the recipe.
"There is also a cultural aspect: is a French tarte aux pommes not as sweet as an English fruit tart? What is the difference between crème fraiche and single cream? Doing something yourself is the best way to learn, and what better incentive when you are having fun and the final product also tastes good?"
