Longshore drift and mapping at Seven Sisters Country Park

On one of the hottest days of the year, our Year 6 pupils enjoyed a geography field trip to the Seven Sisters Country Park in the South Downs. Seven Sisters Country Park is a working farm and is made up of 280 hectares of chalk cliffs, meandering river valley and open chalk grassland.

The day was split into two main activities. In the morning the children, with help from the Park Ranger, learnt about the history of the park and conducted a mapping exercise.  In the afternoon the children studied the meanders of the River Cuckmere. Afterwards, we visited the beach to learn (and act out) the process of longshore drift.

In between these activities the children had lunch in the courtyard of an isolated barn, surrounded by sheep!
