The Thursday before half term literally rocked for our Year 7 and 8 pupils when an impromptu mosh pit developed in the Millennium Hall. Loud music boomed through the doors, children were singing and dancing – what was going on, it was only 11.30am?
Teenage singer and songwriter, Nathan Gurd, was in the (Westbourne) House! At 19, Nathan has already had three top 40 singles in the UK charts, but his path to success has not been easy, as he told the children.
“I was badly bullied at school when I started singing at 13," he said. “People mocked me and said singing was just for girls and I suffered alone for too long. I didn’t tell anyone and it really affected me - so I know how important and good it is to talk.”
Nathan discussed with the children the importance of talking to people when things get tough. In a very positive way, he shared his story about how he had overcome mental health and body image issues as well as cyber bullying to follow his dream of becoming a singer.
Between songs, Nathan answered questions and encouraged the children to follow their dreams. “There will be a few bumps along the road but don’t give up, as it will be worth it,” he said.
Through his music Nathan wants to help and inspire others to believe they can achieve anything. He talked about the importance of having hobbies outside of school work, eating properly, getting lots of sleep and having the courage to talk to friends, family and teachers about problems or worries.
The children said it was "the best". One Year 8 pupil said: “He really made me think about things and how I should go for my goals.”
Another Year 7 pupil said: “It was so cool – I have never been to a concert before.”
Mr Brown, Head of Years 7&8, said: "Nathan had so many important messages to share following on from Children's Mental Health Week. I hope his visit reminds the children that they are brilliant just the way they are and that it's okay not to be 'okay' and to seek reassurance when it is needed. It was a fantastic morning."
Thank you to Nathan for visiting our school and making a memory that will live long in the hearts of our pupils.
