The Parent v Pupil Debate was a great evening of intelligent argument and discussion, and was an enjoyable experience for all involved. There was a lovely positive atmosphere with many amusing moments.
In one debate, Mr Baker and his team argued for co-education against Mrs Sutcliffe's team speaking for single sex schools. Mr Baker, of course, debated strongly for co-education, and the debate was won by his team, supported no doubt by Finn's summing up: "After all, you have all chosen to send your children to a co-educational school, so you must all believe in co-education."
Parent participant, Mr Goddard, wrote in to mention his favourite moment of the night, when a pupil beautifully pulled the argument back from a digression. The debate was vegetarianism vs meat-eating, and the debate had gone off on a tangent regarding plastic pollution. The adult team had made a quip about "flying pigs" and pupil Daisy swiftly cut them down with the addendum of “with plastic wings”. It was nimble of mind and swift in attack, and absolutely brilliant.
Overall, the pupils triumphed. Mrs Sutcliffe said, "Our pupils continue to progress and the arguments are becoming more sophisticated."
The next debating fixture is for Years 6 and 7 at Westbourne House against Lancing Prep School.
