Year 8 pupil, Imogen Marley, describes the drama workshop designed by the Classics Department to develop deeper understanding of the poem The Odyssey by Homer.
All the Year 8s spent a morning re-enacting The Odyssey; the journey home undertaken by Odysseus and his men following the fall of Troy. We were put into groups of five or six and tasked with acting out a scene in The Odyssey. These included the stories of the Cyclops, the Sirens, Circe and others. The aim of the morning was to learn in detail the story of The Odyssey ready for our CE [common entrance exam] in the summer. We also incorporated various drama techniques we’ve learned, including freeze-frame, devil and angel, and flashback.
The Year 7s came along as an audience for our final performance which was a bit hectic but good fun, and the story held together. We learnt the story of The Odyssey, part of Greek Mythology, and even gained some new acting skills.
Thank you to the Classics teachers and Mr Cousens for organising such a lovely morning,
Imogen Marley
