Outdoor learning

There were a number of outdoor lessons as the spring sunshine blessed Westbourne House at the end of term, some of which are featured below.

In History, Mrs Armitage took two of her classes out for a chronological Easter Egg Hunt. She had hidden Easter eggs which contained key historical dates.  The children had a list of events and, once all the eggs had been found, they worked as a team to match the date to the event.  Mrs Armitage said: “Developing chronological understanding is challenging for children and an activity like this encourages them to build on what they know to help them create their own 'map' of the past. By using what they do know, they test the logic of what they don’t know to try to find the right answer… it’s a bit like detective work. They needed to use their collaborative skills too - listening to each other was essential, as was sticking with the task to make sure that they had found all the eggs!"

Meanwhile, Mr Fisher was outside with his class, performing drama on the grass, and Year 4 were out getting their creative juices flowing in the natural environment as the lake comes to life this spring time.

"We’re so lucky to be able to walk around for inspiration for our spring poems," explained a Year 4 pupil.

The children wrote down different words, ideas, phrases and drew pictures for inspiration.

'Glistening grass'
'Crystal blue sky'
'Calming still water'
'Opalescent waters were so lovely in the gleaming sun'

One pupil commented: "It’s such a privilege to have our lake as it means we can have more space".

Another added: "It was such a special English lesson, now the weather is better we are able to come and explore for ideas."
