Winding River

Our Year 4 pupils donned their wellies and undertook a variety of river field work exercises at Fishbourne Meadows.

The children measured the width and depth of the river, comparing and measuring the size of pebbles, as well as observing the water speed at various points in the river. They looked at different ways of recording all this data and observed confluence, meanders, deposition and erosion.

“I liked standing in the river when we were doing the measurements.”

Mrs Davies, Head of Year 4, said: “The children walked along the reed beds and discussed the mixture of sea water and freshwater that is found in this area (called brackish water). They spotted lots of different plants and animals that make their habitats in this area. All of this work complemented their current topic of Misty Mountain, Winding River.”

“I liked doing the sketching of the river. I added lots of details into mine.”

Thank you to Chichester Harbour Conservancy for leading our trip. It was a great opportunity for the children to see first-hand everything that they have been learning about in the classroom.

Weekly outdoor learning

Our Year 4 pupils had several fantastic outdoor learning sessions over the term so far including canoeing on the lake.

"The children absolutely love being out on the lake. It gives them a sense of freedom to develop new skills and explore their environment. Being outside in nature brings so many benefits canoeing builds on their balancing skills, coordination and muscle strength. Teamwork also forms a huge part of this activity as the children have to communicate with each other to effectively control their canoes!"
