Plans for British Science Week

Head of Science, Caroline Thorne, shares the Science Department’s plans for British Science Week, 11 - 15 March.

Next week is going to be an exciting week for all pupils throughout the school, as the Science Department embarks on a week of 'Whizz Bang’ (more BANG to be honest!) to celebrate the 2019 British Science Week.

The syllabus will be 'scientifically' enhanced for a week, as we endeavour to excite, thrill and engage all pupils from Pre-Nursery to Y8 during lessons and break and lunch times.

The emphasis is on real life applications for science with experiments such as ‘fantastic finger prints’ where pupils will search and dust for fingerprints left by staff and match them up to the database, and ‘plastic filter’ where pupils will learn to create a water filter to filter out plastics.

A number of the experiments will focus on improving the habitat at the school to encourage pollination, which also ties in with an international pollination project that Westbourne House is involved in.

Activities planned

  • Dry ice giant bubbles
  • Y8 pig pluck dissection
  • A wacky Pre-Prep Science Assembly
  • Water rockets
  • Setting Miss Thorne alight with methane
