It’s not often you get chance to taste test crisps and cakes in lessons but our Year 7 pupils did!
The children were learning about food waste and the difference between ‘best before’, ‘sell by’ and ‘use by’ dates in their food technology class with Mrs Bonn and special guest, local food writer, Alex Halswell.
Alex has launched a campaign to help people understand more about food waste. She showed the children three, large boxes of food that her local supermarket regularly gives to her for her local homeless charity Stonepillow, which if she didn’t collect would get thrown in the bin.
She talked about the top ten wasted foods in the UK including bread (24 million slices every year) and potatoes (5.8 million potatoes every year) and how we can use them up and store them better if they pass the Sniff Test!
‘More often than not there is nothing wrong with the food,” Ms Halswell added. And the pizza Alex and Mrs Bonn made for the children from the box of goodies was testament to that. “It was delicious!” they said.
