Year 1 had a ‘roarsome’ time enjoying Dinosaur Day. They arrived at school buzzing with excitement and dressed in a fabulous array of dinosaur colours and costumes. We had organised lots of interactive activities, all aimed at making their topic ‘Dinosaur Roar’ come to life.
The children loved being palaeontologists and digging for fossils. Each child was given a cookie and imagined the cookie itself was the earth and the chocolate chips were fossils. They then used toothpicks to try to excavate the ‘fossils’. It was quite tricky removing them without any pieces breaking off. They learnt that to be a palaeontologist you have to have a lot of patience and work very carefully.
Another highlight was making their own salt dough fossils using dinosaurs and real fossils to create imprints in the dough. They then used shiny metallic paint to add some colour to their creations.
In the afternoon, the children went on a scavenger hunt to find missing dinosaur bones in the school grounds. Once found, they had to work together as a team to put the pieces together to build a dinosaur skeleton. There were squeals of delight and lots of giggles as we finished off the afternoon with a dinosaur egg and spoon race.
A fantastic day was had by all and it was lovely to see the children so engaged in this fascinating topic.
