Girls’ Sport
This has been an action-packed half of term for the girls. All year groups have competed in numerous cricket fixtures, inter-patrol cricket and we have had a number of athletics events in which our U8s, U9s and U10-U13 have competed. The girls have worked extremely hard so far and should be proud of their achievements. We cannot wait to see what the next half of the term has in store!
Cricket
The U8s have worked hard in training focusing on gaining a strong understanding of the game - in particular batting and fielding skills. They had a great first game vs Highfield and took a strong win by 10 wickets. They also had their first ever mixed cricket fixture vs Brookham held at Westbourne which was a huge success.
The U9s have had a strong start to the cricket season with the U9A team winning two out of their four matches. They have demonstrated strong batting to ensure that they can score as many runs as possible. The U9B team have won three out of three which is fantastic and the C team have developed their skills nicely and just narrowly missed out vs Highfield.
The U10s have shown great enthusiasm this term, despite numbers being lower in teams at times, the girls have always had a positive attitude and given it their all. The As faced a first initial match of the season vs Twyford. However, they soon stepped up and had great games against Cranleigh and Highfield. The B team have worked hard to improve their accuracy and pace when bowling which is making a positive impact as a whole. The C team had a respective draw vs Seaford and just fell short against Highfield.
Our U11s have had a busy half of term, with a number of cricket fixtures in the diary. Our U11As have worked hard in every aspect and together as a team. They have managed to secure two wins and two losses and they have IAPS around the corner which they are really looking forward to and it will be great to see them putting their skills to the test. U11Bs have demonstrated great perseverance and are starting to think tactically when it comes to batting. Their fielding skills are coming along nicely. Similarly, they secured two wins and two losses. Our U11C team have demonstrated great communication as a team and secured two wins so far this season.
Our 1st - 5th teams have had a tremendous start to the season. All U12 and U13 girls have been involved in numerous fixtures and have shown brilliant team work and resilience. Our 1st team have had a superb half of term successfully winning all of their fixtures and getting through to the quarter-finals of IAPS, where they had a comfortable win against Seaford and St Christopher’s. Both our 2nd and 3rd teams have followed in their footsteps confidently winning all of their fixtures. It is evident that all the girls work extremely hard both in lessons and fixtures. The 4th and 5th team are developing well and have secured some strong wins against tough opposition, which is great to see. With cricket net sessions happening at breaktimes, it is fab to see all the girls practising where they can.
Athletics
On the 3 May we hosted our annual Athletics Meet at Westbourne House, which was a huge success with numerous track and field events taking place. We had a total of 11 other schools competing with U10-U13 girls taking part. After some all-round brilliant performances, we came first with a total of 105 points. In second place was Farlington School with 55 points and third was Windlesham with 51 points.
Later in the term we competed in the Hurst Girls’ Athletics competition held at Withdean Sports Complex, where we pulled in some fantastic results. Many of our girls managed to secure podium spots in their heat and there were a huge number of personal bests, which was truly great to see. This was a fantastic opportunity for them to experience racing on a track.
Boys’ Sport
Cricket
The first half of term has flown by with over 75 cricket matches being played, accompanied by athletics, tennis and real tennis matches. Lots going on!
The cricket teams have had mixed success but all registering a number of good victories. The 2nd XI, U10A and U11B teams have really flown the Westbourne flag this half of term with unbeaten seasons to date. Every child has already had a number of chances to represent the school this term with some great stand out performances:
- Maiden school 50s for Rupert G, George H and Rory O’C in the U10A team. With an excellent 49 for Ben C.
- Edward C for five direct hit run outs in one game against Highfield.
- Three wickets for four runs by Adi S against Pilgrims.
- Harry C’s unbeaten 40 against Highfield.
- Ludo K’s 49. He was unfortunately out on the last ball of the innings trying to get his 50.
- Toby R’s three wickets for seven runs against Seaford College.
- Freddie T 45 not out v Pilgrims.
This is just to name a few. I’m sure there will be plenty more to add to this come the end of the season as there is much cricket left to be played.
Tennis
The boys have played three tennis matches as well as the Sussex Shield tennis tournament this half of term. The U12s won their match with Windlesham, while the U13 team registered wins against both Windlesham and Cranleigh. In the Sussex Shield, we sent a team of four over to Bede’s School. We finished second in the group, qualifying for the main event. After winning our quarter-final, we were then knocked out in the semis before winning our third/fourth play off.
