The Westbourne House School scrubs team, made up of staff and parents and their neighbours and friends, led by the inspirational Head of Art Lisa Jeram, have now made hundreds of scrub bags, headbands, mask adaptors, scrubs and scrub hats for carers and frontline staff working across the NHS as well as material, crocheted and knitted hearts for patients and their families.
The Westbourne team have joined two local groups run from Facebook to make sure every item made goes as quickly as possible to those who need it most (Arun NHS Scrub Community Circle - FTLOS Sussex subgroup and CHICHESTER SCRUBS GROUP).
Westbourne House School scrubs team were delighted that so many people donated material, buttons, thread, elastic and sewing power. The staff at St Richards Maternity Unit, three other wards at St Richard's Hospital, Worthing Hospital, Arundel Hospital, Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals, local care homes and a hospice are very, very grateful indeed.
Mrs Jeram said: "The moment I heard people were making scrub bags on social media I instantly had an overwhelming urge to get involved. When you realise that you can actually do something to help at a time like this it gives you a drive you didn’t realise you had.
"Knowing that every time you sew something you may have made someone’s life a little easier - someone who is going above and beyond for all of us. A little bit of sewing is the least I can do. I have a few friends in the NHS and being able to support them by making scrub bags, mask adaptors and headbands has been a pleasure. There’s now also a lot of people that I don’t know using the items the school scrubs team have made, and it’s great to know we can do something for others and help."
"We have been able to help current parents, former school parents and former school nurses and their colleagues as well as so many local care providers and it has been a huge privilege for us all."
"I'm teaching full-time so I can only sew at the weekends now, but the others have taken on the challenge and are doing a really great job."
