U14 Butler Cup Chess

Our Westbourne B team, a quartet of Henry Langford, Alex Witcomb, Harry Murphy and Jack Burton, had their first match of the season in the first round of the Butlers Cup on Wednesday.

They were pitched against formidable foes: Windlesham A and Downland’s School from Hassocks (previous winners of the competition).

James Stewart, Head of Year 4, said, "I was very proud of my boys; they competed with focus and concentration in all their matches and although their overall record of one win and one draw in their 12 matches looks a disappointing return, there were many reasons to stay cheerful. Well done to Jack Burton who picked up our only win of the day on Table 4, Alex on Table 2 was well on top in his last match and ended up with a very frustrating stalemate when victory was well within his grasp."

He continued, "We live to fight another day. Particular thanks to Henry who stepped in at the last minute to man Table 1 and put up a decent fight in all his matches."

PoM- Jack B who played with maturity and skill throughout
