Year 1 arrived at school buzzing with excitement for Dinosaur Day
Year 1 had a ‘roarsome’ time! There were lots of interactive activities aimed at bringing the topic Dinosaur Roar to life. They started off the day decorating and building their own model flying pterodactyls. They then tried being palaeontologists, digging for fossils. Each child was given a cookie and imagined the cookie itself was the earth and the chocolate chips were fossils. They then used toothpicks to try to excavate the ‘fossils’. It was quite tricky removing them without any pieces breaking off. We learnt that to be a palaeontologist you have to have a lot of patience and work very carefully. They then went on a scavenger hunt to find dinosaur bones hidden in different parts of the school. Once found, they worked together as a team to put the pieces together to build a dinosaur skeleton. Finally, putting their food tech skills to test, the children created their own delicious dinosaur egg nests!
Dinosaur Day was the culmination of an exciting, creative curriculum topic that has been working its magic, sparking thoughts, questions and interests and providing lots of chances to experience learning.
Year 1 explored the concept of habitats; first they discussed and then searched for examples of animal habitats around the lake and in the woods. Then, they linked this learning to dinosaurs and the various habitats they roamed.
In the Food Technology kitchens Year 1 worked with Mrs Bonn, Food Tech teacher. She gave them free rein to cover their dinosaur biscuits with brightly-coloured icing and wild imaginings of scales, eyes and spines.
