World Art Day

World Art Day was a huge hit with our children in Pre-Prep. It started in assembly as they read The Dot by Peter Reynolds together. This is the story of Vashti, a girl who is convinced that she can't draw but as her teacher gently encourages her to begin with a single dot, her creativity takes off.

Inspired by the story, our Pre-Prep pupils headed off to become artists for the day. Our Nursery class explored Aboriginal art techniques, the Reception classes created their own interpretations of Alma Thomas’ radial symmetry designs, while our Year 2 pupils designed art inspired by Frida Kahlo and Friedrich Hundertwasser. Year 1 looked at the Ndebele art from the South African artist Esther Mahlangu. They created their own Ndebele style patterns which were added to straw rooves to make 3D Ndebele huts.

“The Reception children have been learning about the African-American artist, Alma Thomas, who incorporated shapes and patterns from nature into her art work. The children recreated versions of her 1971 work ‘Springtime in Washington’ and really immersed themselves in the process.”
