Boys’ sport round-up

Mr Smith talks through team triumphs and challenges in the boys' sport news.

Football
The U9 and U8 football seasons finished with excellent performances in local tournaments. The U9As were unbeaten at the Oakwood event while the U8s played really well in the PGS festival. In inter-school matches, the A team played 10 and won 9.

The U9C team

Will D, Charlie K, Jo P, Harry R, Alfie R, Toby R, Arthur R. This team was the inaugural winner of the “Team of the Week” for a combination of effort, commitment and team work.

Well done also to Vinnie G, Ollie M and Henry W who have been selected for Sussex Prep School Lions to play in the Gothia Cup in Sweden next year.

Squash
Squash continues to flourish at Westbourne, with all the children being introduced into the game through PE sessions.

We have squads at U11, U12 and U13. The top team were successful in the Lancing Prep Schools tournament, probably the top event in the South of England. The senior boys finished the term playing against a Dads team. A reflection of the standard meant it was a thoroughly entertaining evening.

Cricket
The senior boys completed a hugely successful 10th tour to South Africa.  Twenty-two Year 8 boys took part in seven cricket matches, a two-day safari, a boat cruise, a shark dissection, and danced and threw spears with Zulu warriors. The boys were great ambassadors for both school and country and I am sure will have some wonderful memories.

Congratulations to both Toby B and Fergus O who were awarded “player of the year” for their county teams.

Rugby
The rugby season has started well and much coaching and hard work has gone into the development of the boys’ skills. As parents you only
see the results on a Wednesday or Saturday, we however see all the effort, commitment, disappointment, progress etc that happens on a daily basis.

The U13As have made a very promising start to the season with some excellent performances against tough opposition. Ed T and Hugh F have done a great job captaining the side and setting the tone for others to follow. The highlight so far was the victory at the Worth tournament where we came out on top against some traditionally strong schools.

It has been a great first half of the season for the U13Bs. They are unbeaten against all comers and all victories have been away from home!  Arya J has scored a bucket load of tries while Josh B has been heroic leading the defensive line.

The U12s have been an exciting team to watch. They are a team blessed with pace and good handling. Two wonderfully drawn games against Windlesham and Highfield have been the highlights. These were games which were great to watch and our fast brand of rugby ensured we scored a number of tries in wide positions.

The U11s have found things tough and will need to learn resilience and a positive team approach to bounce back next term.

The U10A team are currently unbeaten, having played against six schools. Although, tougher challenges follow in the new year. Lachlan F and Rohan D have stood out for their passing ability; Oliver N and Oliver B for their tackling; Jacob B, Fergus O and Tommy O for their rucking and Stanley R and Austin A for their finishing.

The U10B team are also all conquering with six straight victories. The team is blessed with pace and flair but it is the dogged determination and quick tackling that makes it so hard for the opposition. Max A epitomises this perfectly.

The U9s have made a good start to their season with good performances against Highfield, and have quickly grasped the fundamental skills in training.

Senior Inter-Patrol Rugby
This year’s senior inter-patrol rugby was as hotly contested as ever. With bragging rights the main prize, the effort and passion on show at times, perhaps eclipses that seen in our school fixtures. With the change in rugby rules in recent times, it is nice to see the two year groups playing together, with the Year 7s showing the older boys what they have to offer. Tigers were the run away winners, with each patrol in both the A and B competitions doing their best to put them under pressure, but coming up slightly short. The standard of rugby played throughout was very high, with all boys getting thoroughly stuck in and playing important parts for their teams. Owls ended up finishing second with a tie for third place between Otters and Panthers.  A really enjoyable afternoon with plenty of quality and effort on show.

Intermediate Inter-Patrol Rugby
To say this was a tightly contested event would be an understatement. There were many cliff hangers and a number of games ended in draws. The B team competition ultimately decided the final positions which meant a three-way tie for 2nd place with the winners Panthers just one point in front.
