As part of the topic ‘Out of this World’, Year 1 have been on an adventure to explore the wonders of space. They have learnt all about the planets in our solar system, famous astronauts like Tim Peake, Neil Armstrong and Mae Jemison as well as what it would be like to be an astronaut on the International Space Station.
Armed with plenty of knowledge, facts to share and huge excitement, the children visited the South Downs Planetarium. First stop was a visit to the star dome to watch, in awe, as the dome turned into the night sky. The children were immersed in the universe, with our Milky Way, planets, the moon and stars projected above and around them. They explored different constellations, toured the International Space Station and visited the planets of our solar system. The planetarium staff were particularly impressed by the children’s knowledge about space.
The children then took part in a fun scavenger hunt around the planetarium to find different star, moon and planet clues. Finally, the children were virtually blasted off into space to experience a rocket launch to the moon. It was a truly out-of-this-world experience!
