Dragons and dreams

Oh, to be a princess or a knight for a whole day!

That’s what our Year 2 pupils did during a fun-packed Knights and Princesses Day, the culmination of this term's imagination-fuelling topic.  They were lucky enough to watch a falconry display and meet a peregrine falcon, a beautiful barn owl, a kestrel and a Harris hawk. They felt like kings, queens, knights and nobles of old!

Year 2 teacher, Emma Temple, said: “The children were amazed by the tame barn owl flying between their gauntlets (gloves) across the Pre Prep hall and the falcon whose top speed is 240mph!"

“I couldn't believe how many mice the kestrel could eat!” said one Year 2 Knight.

Our Year 2 children loved getting into character and re-enacting medieval sword fights. “Some pupils have already had fencing lessons at school so knew how to attack and defend safely,” said Mrs Temple.

"My favourite part was making a Knights and Princesses maths board game and I loved the archery with [the aptly named] Mr Knight.”

Year 2 have loved this medieval adventure topic, which has taught them so much about medieval life, events and castles.

“It was funny finding out that a page boy used to learn horse riding by having lessons riding a pig to get their balance,” said one Year 2 pupil.

“I liked learning about all the different ways to attack a castle... the battering ram and trebuchet were my favourite things.”

It is fantastic to see Year 2's enthusiasm for learning about the past developing right at the start of their academic journey at Westbourne House.
