Cakes, pies, snacks, breads - all with a healthy twist.
The annual Great Westbourne Bake Off 2025 was a roaring success. This year, both the junior and senior finalists were tasked with creating their very own bake with a healthy twist. This brief, set by Head of Food Technology Mrs Bonn, gave the children a wonderful amount of creative freedom in their baking, and as a result we saw excellent variety in what the children produced.
“I was so impressed by the children’s preparation and quiet determination as they set about creating their bakes against the clock"
Mrs Bonn, Head of Food Technology
“The seniors’ healthy twists included replacing a high-sugar recipe for a lower sugar one, adding vegetables to bakes, replacing cream with a lower fat alternative such as crème fraiche and replacing bacon with leeks and sweetcorn,” she continued.
Some of the juniors’ ideas included replacing refined sugar with honey and adding poppy seeds to their bakes. They also experimented with fruity flavours such as lemon or raspberry, and substituted lamb with chicken, a leaner meat.
Our guest judge, Alex Halswell, was blown away by what our bakers managed to achieve in under one and a half hours. With her years of experience as a Food Photographer, Food Writer and Cookery School owner, she made the tough task of announcing our winners much easier.
We would like to wish our finalists a big congratulations for all their hard work. In the words of Mrs Bonn: “all of the bakes would easily make it onto a restaurant plate or bakery shelf.” We are looking forward to seeing what they create next.
