The winner of the Great Westbourne Bake Off is...
Our young bakers returned from the Easter holidays full of zest and willing to take a risk in this year's new-look Great Westbourne Bake Off! The introduced Technical Challenge proved a real hit in the food tech kitchen, with over forty budding bakers devoted to taking on the mystery challenge! With the younger bakers creating mouth-wateringly delicious melting moments and the more mature cooks producing delectable jam thumb prints, everyone managed to bake up a worthy accompaniment fit for the finest cup of tea! Our food technology teacher, Julie Bonn, wrote a pun-tastic write up of this early stage.
After tough scrutiny ten worthy competitors made it through to the finals, all tasked with creating their own unique biscuits, using a recipe of their choice. Flavours ranged from Malteser Cookies to Lemon and Ginger Biscuits, Israeli Hamantaschen, Jammy Dodgers, a variety of classic Chocolate/Banana cookies, Mary Berry’s own Chocolate and Vanilla star biscuits and Tana Ramsey’s German spiced lollipops. The skill and determination displayed by all competitors (as seen in the picture) was admirable. Guest judge Tilly Wilson (of The Artichoke Kitchen and also an Old Westbournian) commented on how phenomenal our young bakers are!
There can be, however, only one winner and with a faultless score of 35/35, this year’s bake off crown went to Elizabeth Langford for her insatiably appetising Lemon and Ginger biscuits (a classic from Delia). Special commendations were awarded to Natasha King, Robin Baxendale and Poppy Langmead who each narrowly missing out on the winning prize.
Congratulations to everyone who took part in this year’s Bake Off competition, which proved extremely tasty and satisfying for all involved.
