Reception’s ‘Something Special’ day was a great opportunity to celebrate the uniqueness of each child.
The children came to school wearing their favourite clothes and spoke confidently to their friends about why the clothes were special to them.
At the Early Years Assembly, Mrs Rogers and Mrs Lewis shared a special story 'A Super Power like Mine' by Dr Ranj, which encouraged everyone to think about what makes others special and to think about what their own special superpowers might be.
Afterwards, everyone went for a super subitising walk around the playground. Subitising is the ability to look at a small number of objects and instantly recognise how many objects there are without needing to count. They looked for groups of objects in ones and twos and threes and talked about how a larger group of leaves might be made up of other smaller groups. The teachers asked the children to explain what they saw and and how they saw it.
The children then showed themselves and each other how super dextrous and independent they've become. They made super special sandwiches before heading to the climbing wall in the sports hall and demonstrating the skill (Agile) of sensible risk-taking.
In the afternoon, it was party time for Reception with some dancing and fun party games. Afterwards, they made special subitising flags to which the children added their name, age and a subitising challenge to share at home.
What a great day for our children to celebrate each child's individual contribution to the Reception community and the wonderful start to their Westbourne House journey.
