A blast from the past!
Year 5 are exploring some of our school’s rich history through a two-part guided tour with Mrs Armitage, Head of History. “Year 5 are learning about life in Victorian Britain so we always make the most of our very own school, which was a family home during Victorian times, and go exploring,” said Mrs Armitage.
“We look for the differences between the lives of the servants who worked in the house and those of the family who lived there - that is why we focus on the stairs, the windows and the doors.”
Mrs Armitage, Head of History
Going around the school prompted questions from the children about many periods of history, including the Second World War. Photographs and paintings in our school’s reception of soldiers relaxing at their station at Shopwyke Park (before the school moved here in 1946) prompted one curious child to ask: “Why are they relaxing if there’s a war going on?”
We encourage our children to stay inquisitive and keep questioning the world around them. Showing these periods of history taking place within a familiar environment allows pupils to connect with events and historical periods more closely. It's such an engaging learning experience.
